TfT Masterclasses

Masterclasses are an opportunity for experienced TfT teachers to come together over Zoom in a short course format to deepen their TfT implementation.

2024 Masterclasses

2024 Dates: July 9, 11, 16, 18

Each Masterclass includes four 90-minute Zoom sessions (11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. CST)

Teachers will leave the Masterclasses with:

  • a TfT implementation plan for the upcoming school year
  • a professional network beyond their school with other teachers in expertise areas
  • a deeper understanding of TfT’s core and essential practices
  • a renewed enthusiasm for TfT living in their classrooms

2024 TfT Masterclasses will be offered in the following specialty areas:

Primary Classroom: Grades k-2 | July 9, 11, 16, 18 (11AM CST)
Description: Deepen your implementation of the core practices in the primary grades with sessions focused on Deep Hope and Storyline, Storyboards, Throughlines, and Formational Learning Experiences. 
Facilitator: Elizabeth Benscoter is a 1st grade teacher and instructional coach at Grace Community School in Tyler, Texas. TfT has invigorated and focused her teaching practices as she leads her students to be active participants in God’s Story. When she is not in the classroom, you can find Elizabeth enjoying a walk in the woods or sipping a cup of tea while she crochets or reads.

Facilitator: Pamela Zuidhof is excited to connect with you, building on her experience teaching 3rd and 5th grades, and as an instructional coach and assistant principal at Surrey Christian School in British Columbia, Canada. Pam loves being a creation enjoyer by exploring God’s beautiful creation while biking, hiking, and paddle boarding.
middle school Classroom: Grades 6-8 | July 9, 11, 16, 18 (11AM CST)
Description: Deepen your implementation of the core practices in the middle school classroom with sessions focused on Deep Hope and Storyline, Storyboards, Throughlines, and Formational Learning Experiences. 
Facilitator: Stacey Hicklin, a middle school science teacher and instructional coach at Delaware County Christian School in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, loves the wild world of middle school. TfT’s framework empowers her to invite students to discover their distinct roles and purposes within God's Story. Beyond the classroom, Stacey finds joy in walking outdoors, tending plants, savoring coffee, and immersing herself in great books.

6-12 mathematics | July 9, 11, 16, 18 (11AM CST)
Description: Deepen your implementation of the core practices in the secondary mathematics classroom with sessions focused on Deep Hope and Storyline, Storyboards, Throughlines, and Formational Learning Experiences. 
Facilitator: John Lamb is the chair of the mathematics department at Grace Community High School in Tyler, TX. John teaches Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus and is the co-sponsor for the Mu Alpha Theta math honor society. John earned his Ph.D. in secondary mathematics education from Mississippi State University in 2006. He has a master's and bachelor's degree in mathematics from Mississippi College. John was a middle and high school mathematics teacher in Mississippi for 5 years, was a tenured professor of mathematics education at The University of Texas at Tyler for 16 years, and has taught at Grace for the last 3 years. John has taught and trained mathematics teachers, published papers, spoken professionally, and secured millions in grant funding over his career. John lives on 18 acres where he raises chickens, goats, and his own children (the youngest was born this past Valentine's Day) with his wife Sherri. TfT has given John the tools necessary to better glorify God throughout His curriculum, and John is excited to share his journey in this masterclass.

learning targets: Grades k-12 | July 9, 11, 16, 18 (11AM CST)
Description: Join us in this new masterclass offering to hone your skills with long-term and supporting targets that connect to God's Story, focus the learning, and empower the learners. 
Facilitator: Rachel Vanden Hull is a 5th grade teacher and instructional coach at Sioux Center Christian School in Sioux Center, Iowa. Through implementing the TfT framework, Rachel loves to invite students into their active role in God’s Story. For her, working alongside teachers to empower them in their TfT practices is a passion. Outside of the classroom, Rachel cherishes time spent with her family and friends, losing herself in books, and finds fun in camping trips.

FLEx Design for Elementary: Grades k-5 | July 9, 11, 16, 18 (11AM CST)
Description: Join us in this new masterclass offering to focus on FLEx design that invites, nurtures, and empowers learners in the elementary classroom.
Facilitator: Kelly Fish is an elementary instructional coach at Bellevue Christian School, where she has previously taught grades 3-5. Engaging in God's story alongside her students and colleagues through the TfT framework has become her deepest professional joy. Kelly has also worked with CACE in designing World Vision Ignite curriculum, and joyfully collaborating with teachers in learning design continues to be a focus in her current coaching role. At home, Kelly enjoys playing with her two dogs and growing flowers in her backyard.

FLEx Design for secondary: Grades 6-12 | July 9, 11, 16, 18 (11AM CST)
Description: Join us in this new masterclass offering to focus on FLEx design that invites, nurtures, and empowers learners at the secondary level.
Facilitator: Matt Berka is an English teacher and instructional coach at Southwest Christian High School in Chaska, Minnesota. These positions allow Matt to continue teaching in the disciplines that he loves and working alongside colleagues to explore and implement effective teaching practices. Using TfT’s framework, Matt is interested in equipping his students to think deeply and critically about words and ideas. He believes that the traditional work of the English classroom—reading, writing, thinking, and speaking—are powerful tools to help students more clearly see and follow Jesus Christ, engage the world in which they live, and pursue the Kingdom of God. Aside from teaching, Matt enjoys spending time with his family and good friends, listening to The Beatles, and playing a game or sport of nearly any kind.

Description: If you lead TfT implementation at your school, this masterclass is for you! Join us to learn how to model TfT and how to lead TfT for ongoing and sustaining change at your school. 
Facilitator: Amanda Albright is the Director of Learning for Teaching for Transformation. She has taught in public and private schools in the Pacific Northwest as well as a Christian school in the Dominican Republic, and has served in a variety of school leadership roles. Her passion for education was fueled and shaped by her time overseas, and she continues to find great joy in working with teachers and leaders from a variety of backgrounds. As a school designer for TfT, Amanda bears witness to students and teachers growing into a deeper understanding of who God is as they learn and live His Story. Beyond her work with schools, Amanda loves an adventure and is particularly drawn to traveling internationally to meet people and climb mountains around the world.

When he is not thinking about teaching and learning about being people of God’s Story, he enjoys woodworking, reading and summer camp, where he plays with campers, animals, and guitars.
6-12 social studies | July 11, 13, 18, 20 (11 A.M. CST)
Peter Welle is a history teacher and professional development coordinator at Southwest Christian High School in Chaska, Minnesota. In all his work with high school students, Peter tries to play the long game with his instruction, aiming at lifelong goals. As a drifter for a few years himself, he realizes that some seeds take time to sprout and bear fruit. His pedagogical practice has been invigorated by Teaching for Transformation: he has witnessed his students find deeper purpose for understanding history—as a means to activate kingdom life. When he's not teaching, Peter can usually be found at home with his family playing board games, strumming his guitar, or muttering under his breath about the Minnesota Vikings.
6-12 the sciences | July 11, 13, 18, 20 (11 A.M. CST)
Thor Benson is the Dean of Faculty and science teacher at Southwest Christian High School in Chaska, MN, where he loves engaging his storyline of "order, beauty and chaos" as faculty and students consider God’s work in creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. Thor is also a TfT school designer who has loved collaborating with schools in MN, IA, TX, and TN. When not talking about teaching and learning, Thor can be found coaching the high school lacrosse team, mountain biking, playing a lawn game, and spending time with his wife and three children.
6-12 english language arts | July 11, 13, 18, 20 (11 A.M. CST)
Aimee Tawzer is the High School English teacher and Department Chair at Central Christian School in Redmond, Oregon. She enjoys curriculum design and believes in literature as a powerful tool for transformation. Teaching for Transformation has brought clarity and cohesion to the English secondary curriculum by offering a framework that unites biblical integration, essential questions, and content. Outside of the classroom you will find her spending time with her husband and two children, going to the gym, or curling up with a cup of coffee at her favorite bookstore.

Eddy Efaw is a native of West Virginia and has been teaching visual arts and Bible at Harding Academy in Memphis, Tennessee, for 25 years. He has taught students ranging from 7th-12th grades in his time at Harding, and for the past decade his primary focus has been teaching visual arts and ceramics to students in grades 9-12. Eddy has always taught from a Christian perspective by bringing biblical themes into his art classes and engaging his Bible students with concepts from his art background. Teaching for Transformation has focused his teaching in profound ways over the last 5 years, and Eddy looks forward to sharing his journey and learning alongside others through ongoing work in TfT.

Jessica DeWit is the Teaching for Transformation Director and Professional Development Coordinator at Sioux Falls Christian School, where her deepest hope is to empower others to live their part in God's story as part of a joyful TfT community. Before serving in her current role, Jessica taught choir, band, and other general music and fine arts classes for over 10 years. Outside of school she enjoys working on home projects and spending time with her husband Elliot and son Josiah.
Jamie Wernet serves as the Director of Learning and teaches secondary mathematics at Lansing Christian School. As a teacher, she loves how TfT offers a framework to help students see mathematics as a way to better understand their role in God's story and who He is. As a school leader, Jamie loves seeing teachers learn together as they commit to try new practices. Outside of school, Jamie's favorite thing is enjoying creation with her husband and five school-aged children.
